Story should be the only thing that matters in your script, but unfortunately this is Hollywood and looks do matter.

You better have your page count, margins, font and slug lines looking right or you will be relegated to the dreaded PASS pile. In one of my first development jobs at the studio I was told, "If they don't get the format right, then they didn't get anything else right."

Bottom line, get the formatting right or at least give the appearance that it is right and if you want to (ahem) cheat the system, I have some advice on how you might be able to do that too. You can also check out the formatting resources below.

Formatting Basics

Font = 12 point Courier, Courier New, Courier Final Draft

Paper = White 8 1/2 by 11, 3-hole punched 20 lb. bond

Brads = Acco Brass Fastners Number Five, one in the top hole and one in the bottom

Margins = 1 inch from page borders. Screenwriting software will auto format this.

Capitalize all shot headings, scene transitions, character's names over dialogue, sound effects, camera directions and the names of speaking character when they are first introduced.
